Schwabing - my Munich

Schwabing is probably the most famous district of Munich, which has always magically captivated people.

The “trendy district” was first mentioned in 782 under the name “Sunapinga” and is therefore almost 400 years older than Munich, which was only founded in 1158.

In 1890 Schwabing was incorporated into Munich. This led to a major construction boom in the Wilhelminian era. Franz von Stuck founded Art Nouveau here, a style that still has a significant influence on the streetscape of Schwabing today. At the same time, Schwabing developed into an “art metropolis” with the founding of the university and the Academy of Fine Arts.

Important personalities such as Thomas Mann, Frank Wedekind and Rainer Maria Rilke, but also artists such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky frequented the numerous cafés and pubs and coined the term “Munich Bohème”. Geographically, Schwabing includes part of the English Garden and is bordered in the east by the Isar. In the south, the Siegestor - probably Schwabing's most famous sight - marks the border to Maxvorstadt and the university district.
