The community Alsbach-Hähnlein was created in 1977 on the occasion of the regional reform through the merger of the formerly independent communities Alsbach and Hähnlein.
The official population statistics show around 9,400 inhabitants as of June 30, 2018. Structurally, the municipality of Alsbach-Hähnlein is a residential municipality with a slightly rural but also slightly urban character. Tourism mainly consists of day visitors, especially those coming from Darmstadt, who are looking for relaxation in the Alsbach recreational facilities and on the Bergstrasse. With the expansion of a network of hiking trails, a mountain bike route, barbecue and playgrounds, a rich range of leisure offers has been created here. Other attractions are the Alsbach Castle and the Melibokus Tower, which is easy to reach from there.
The district of Sandwiese, which arose between Alsbach and Hähnlein after the war, is partly a residential area and partly an industrial area. Baked goods, textiles and chemical are the main products made here. The Alsbach-Hähnlein Museum in OT Hähnlein and the Jewish cemetery in OT Alsbach are also important.
The Hähnlein district used to be considered a purely rural community and developed into a residential community only after the war. The number of full-time farms has continued to decline in recent years. Mainly sugar beet and grain are grown. New residential development areas identified in all districts suggest a further increase in population. The local history museum Alsbach-Hähnlein impresses its visitors with interesting pieces of everyday life, but also with various special exhibitions that attract visitors from the near and far.
