Essen-Bredeney

Essen is an independent city in the Düsseldorf administrative district of North Rhine-Westphalia.

It is located in the centre of the Ruhr area and the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.

After Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund, Essen is the fourth largest city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as one of the upper centres.

Essen is the seat of well-known large companies as a significant industrial and economic location and, with the University of Duisburg-Essen, also a university location.

With the Museum Folkwang, Essen has a renowned collection of modern paintings, sculptures, graphics and photographs. The opera house built according to plans by Alvar Aalto, the Folkwang University of the Arts, the Grillo-Theater, the Ruhr Museum or the German Poster Museum are respected art and cultural institutions.

Düsseldorf Airport, located 30 kilometres southwest of Essen city centre, can be reached via the A 52 motorway; public transport options include primarily the S1 S-Bahn line as well as the RE1, RE2, RE6, RE11 Regional Express lines, which connect the airport with Essen city centre in 22 to 37 minutes, depending on the chosen train. On 31 March 2025, 10,966 inhabitants lived in Bredeney.

The federal road 224 runs through the district with direct connection to the A 52.

Public transport serves the district today with tram lines 107 and 108. Additionally, bus lines 142, 169 and 194 as well as the night express bus lines NE8, NE9 and NE13 of Ruhrbahn operate.

Worth seeing are Villa Hügel as the former seat of the Krupp industrialist family as well as Lake Baldeney. In the Heissiwald forest to the south is the Heissiwald wildlife enclosure.

In Essen-Bredeney there are two Protestant, one Catholic and one German-French kindergarten. In addition, there is the Graf-Spee primary school and the Meisenburg primary school. As secondary schools, Grashof Grammar School and Goetheschule Grammar School are available.

To the south, the Ruhr and Lake Baldeney form the natural boundary of the district to Werden and Fischlaken.
