The Jenfelder Au is Hamburg's first residential district to have the pioneering HAMBURG WATER Cycle environmental concept implemented, a system that breaks ground in terms of the handling of water and energy resources. Rainwater, grey and black water are collected separately and recycled.
Looking closer at some examples: neighbourhood rainfall is prevented from flowing directly into the sewage system, but is instead reused in the district for irrigation of outdoor facilities or diverted directly into the cascade park and the Kühnbachteich. The situation is different with slightly polluted grey water. Sources includes water from kitchens and bathrooms, from dishwashers, showers and washing machines. This wastewater is discharged from the houses using separate pipes and is then clarified in a specially designed system so it can then be reused as service water or discharged safely into local waterways.
Another component of this innovative wastewater concept is the use of a vacuum drainage system. For this, special toilets are used. These direct so-called black water separately via a vacuum system into a biogas plant. The biogas subsequently produced is used to generate climate-neutral heat and electricity that serves the entire neighbourhood via a district heating plant.
Of course, this innovative system works fully automatically, requiring no extra effort on your part – all you have to do is live everyday life as normal!
In sum, the Jenfelder Au district is designed today for the demands of tomorrow: future-oriented, environmentally and economically sustainable – WOW!
