Sylt was separated from the mainland approx. 8,000 years ago and is geographically located at roughly the same latitude as Newcastle in England, Omsk in Siberia and the southern tip of Alaska. Covering approx. 98 km², Sylt is the largest German island in the North Sea and the fourth-largest island in Germany. The island is 38.5 km long and measures just under 600 metres at its narrowest point and up to 12.5 km at its widest. Its highest point, at 52.5 m, is the Uwe Düne near Kampen.
