Sylt was separated from the mainland approximately 8000 years ago and is geographically located at the same latitude as the English city Newcastle, the Siberian city Omsk and the southern tip of Alaska. Sylt is approximately 98 km² large and the largest German North Sea island and the fourth largest island in Germany. The island is 38.5 km long and measures only about 600 meters at the narrowest point, but 12.5 km at the widest point. The highest point at 52.5 m height is the Uwe dune near Kampen.
