According to historical sources, Ilversgehofen was initially the court settlement of a Franconian clan association in the alluvial plain of the narrow Gera, which bore the name Eilbertsgehoven, which means "the courts of Eilbert". In 1304 it was finally owned by Erfurt as Ratsdorf. With the onset of industrialization, the district developed into an important economic center. In 1911 it was incorporated into Erfurt. At that time, the place was a workers' settlement with around 13,000 inhabitants. Most of the buildings in this quarter date from the Gründerzeit and represent their architecture. Ilversgehofen has been a district of the Thuringian state capital since 1992.
